In Safe Hands

The Sports and Outdoor Learning Unit run an annual programme of Child Protection workshops through their ‘Coaching Edinburgh’ service. These are designed to help coaches and club members to recognise and promote good practice in child protection whilst coaching sport.

This year, we are offering eleven ‘Safeguarding and Protecting Children’ workshops for coaches and four ‘In Safe Hands’ workshops spread throughout the year at a variety of location across the City. These workshops are aimed at sports coaches and club welfare officers/child protection officers. Over four hundred people are set to benefit from the programme.

‘We thought introducing a junior section would be far too complex’

One such club to benefit from these courses is Queensferry Rowing Club. As Secretary Peter Locke explains, ‘Our sport is rowing and we thought introducing a junior section would be far too complex. We are very grateful to the Sports Unit for their support and encouragement in how to resolve any issue.’

The Club now has a Child Protection Policy in place. About 15 coxes/coaches have undertaken the appropriate background checks and received PVG certificates. They now have enough young people to form a mixed youth team and intend to enter the Youth Regatta Circuit. For further information please contact www.queensferryrowing.org.

Note: The workshops cost £30 to attend, but coaches can save £10 on the cost of a workshop by joining Coaching Edinburgh, which is free. By doing this, you can also benefit from a variety of other CPD opportunities. Alternatively, your club may be able to access some free places on these courses if they currently deliver for the Active Schools network or if they affiliate to Club Sport Edinburgh.
